Dental crowns are restorations that are used to rebuild and strengthen weak or broken teeth. These coverings are also known as dental caps due to the way they fit over teeth. Dental crowns are also used for changing the shape and colour of your teeth, thereby adding to your aesthetic appeal. If a dental crown is needed on the front teeth, your dentist will ensure that there is a perfect colour match with your other front teeth.
Dental crowns are necessary when you have old fillings that are beyond repair and on teeth that are chipped, fractured or sensitive. There are different types of materials from which dental crowns are made. These include a full porcelain crown, porcelain fused with metal crowns and stainless steel crowns. Your dentist will explain all the differences to you and then advise the best possible solution for your case based on what type of crown is appropriate.
Once there is an agreement between your dentist and yourself, an impression will be taken. This will be sent to our dental laboratory which will fabricate your dental crown. Typically, this is ready in 3 weeks and you will be provided with a temporary solution in the interim period. Once the permanent dental crown is prepared, you will be required to come back to the dental surgery and your dentist will bond the new dental crown in place. This will be usable immediately.
